Under the pressure of the diaphragm spring, it clamps the clutch disc firmly against the flywheel face to transmit engine power to the gearbox. When the clutch pedal is depressed, the diaphragm spring deforms under force, causing the pressure plate to retract and release clamping force on the clutch disc, thereby disconnecting power.
