Simultaneous Multi-Axis Movement
Ball joints are designed to pivot in multiple directions at once. This allows the wheels to turn left and right for steering, while simultaneously moving up and down to absorb bumps and potholes.

Superior Environmental Protection
Unlike exposed alternatives (like heim joints), ball joints are typically sealed with durable, flexible rubber or polyurethane boots. This prevents mud, dirt, and water from degrading the inner socket.
Upper Ball Joints
Designed to maintain alignment and absorb radial loads, such as turning forces, upper ball joints enable proper rotation of steering knuckle. Upper ball joints use a follower design.
Lower Ball Joints
Acting as a pivot point for the steering system, lower ball joints can either be load-carrying or follower types depending on the suspension design. Lower ball joints use a variety of designs: compression loaded, tension loaded and follower.
Main Components
Ball Stud: This is the "ball" part, made from hardened steel with a threaded post on one end that connects to the steering knuckle.
Socket / Housing: The steel casing that the ball stud sits inside. It’s filled with grease to ensure smooth rotation.
Bearings: These are low-friction surfaces, often made of polymer or powdered metal, that sit between the ball stud and the housing to reduce friction and wear.
Rubber Boot: This is arguably the most important part. This flexible seal fits tightly around the joint to keep lubricating grease in and to prevent dirt, water, and grit from getting inside and destroying the joint.
